History

For over 40 years, lost and abandoned cats, dogs and other animals in the St George Area have been impounded in the kennels at the rear of the St George Animal Hospital.

In 1999 the new owners of the Hospital decided to separate the pound from the hospital so that abandoned animals would have their own facility with special care and staff until a new home could be found for them and St George Animal Shelter was born.

As the Shelter is used by 10 Councils from Sydney Harbour to the Georges River, it was decided to change the name to Sydney Dogs Home. In June 2006 in recognition of the many cats also impounded, the name was changed to Sydney Dogs & Cats Home Inc.

Our Goal

Our goal is to prevent the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, loving, domestic pets. A second chance is given to all pets, young or old, and those with special needs.  We have 24 hour veterinary staff on hand to attend to any emergencies and daily care of the animals. Our ultimate aim is to rehome these pets into a loving home.

Our Hours

Sydney Dogs & Cats Home is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Unlike many other animal shelters in Sydney, our doors are never closed to lost dogs and cats in our Council areas.

We care

The Sydney Dogs & Cats Home desexes, microchips, vaccinates, worms and lifetime registers each pet before going to a new home. We do not rehome cats and dogs undesexed and do not knowingly rehome aggressive animals. Our stance on this has been firm and all pets are strictly assessed during their stay at our shelter.

Funding

As Councils provide funds for only one week for an unmicrochipped pet and two weeks for a microchipped pet, Sydney Dogs & Cats Home became a registered charity to raise funds to help keep pets alive longer so that the right home can be found. We are able to accommodate 60 dogs and 50 cats at any one time.

Rehoming

Our rehoming rate for dogs is now over 90%, a figure higher than that achieved by any other Council animal care facility.  Our rehoming rate for cats is 35% (and growing). We receive over 2,000 cats and kittens each year, the majority are loving, domesticated cats who have become lost or abandoned and we are always amazed that only 4% are reclaimed by their owners.

We have found that most dogs and cats are rehomable and compatible if given a second chance in an understanding and loving environment.
